“The City of Gems” is  situated in a valley in the hills of the Sabaragamuwa  province .The hills surrounding this valley as well as the river that flows through , have  been producing gems for thousands of years. World renowned through the story of Sindbad this verdant valley is famous for its Sapphires, and rubies and valuable precious stones. It is said the King Solomon valued Sri Lanka’s valuable gems. The surrounding areas are also well known for its agriculture and tea, rubber and coconut estates.
