Negombo

This city is situated just 40 km from Colombo. The international airport is located with its limits and is the first stop for most tourists and travellers. A modern tourist attraction with its vast lagoon, Negombo is famous for its fishing. And visiting the fish market is quite an experience. The town has a mixed heritage going back to the Arab cinnamon traders and the western colonial rulers. The Portuguese ousted the dominant Moors and established Roman Catholicism which is the majority religion of the fisher folk. The old architecture of the Portuguese is visible in the Fort, as well as the Dutch canal that intersects the town. The beaches are pristine and several modern star class hotels and restaurants catering to the visitors. Touring the town and its environment is a memorable  experience.
