This beautiful picturesque plateau  located in the central highlands,is home to one of the worlds most unique eco-systems.It has a high elevation over  2000 meters and is covered with rain clouded forests and misty grassy plains. There are several species of fauna and flora with some endemic only to Horton  plains. Three great rivers the Mahaweli,Kelaniya,and Walawe begin their journeys from this plateau. Various wild life with herds of Sambhur and deer and sightings of up-country leopard have been reported.The streams are laden with trout and other species of fish, brought by the British. It is one of the most important sanctuaries for wildlife and birds, and butterflies, and new species like frogs are still being discovered. Among the attractions are the  majestic Bakers and Bambarakanda falls and the  precipitous Lovers leap are some of the  popular places with the visitors, from around the world. One can visit the beautifully sculptured Hakgala Botanical garden ,as well as the Amman kovil which is situated nearby. It is situated just 20kms from the garden city of Nuwara Eliya and 6 km from Ohiya. The drive through the mountainous terrain  is an unforgettable experience not to be missed.
